Can you get ejected from a ballgame for throwing a home run ball back on the field?

by admin on Jun.12, 2010, under Baseball

Fans throwing items onto the field get ejected from the game. Does this count when the opposing team hits a home run and you decide to throw it back? Or is this recognized as part of the game or tradition?

    Probably from the fans.

This has happened many times, so you wouldn’t get ejected.

yes it does also can be criminally charged

No you do not get ejected from the game for throwing the game ball back. Throwing other items will however.

Thats all part of the experieance. Spit on the ball first though.

The fan should be thrown out to protect the players safety even though it is a tradition. Its best just to keep it.

Why would someone throw the ball back??? Well, if they do, they would just be trying to send it back to it’s home (pun intended!), so I think the police would be forgiving.

no, you can throw it back if the opposing team hits a home run. It’s a big part of the game.

  • Victor

Probably not since it’s their ball, but the guy sitting next to you might slap you upside the head.

It’s mostly been a Chicago Cubs tradition, but I suppose if you were close enough to a player and threw it at them maliciously, then you’d certainly get tossed, perhaps prosecuted! Otherwise, I don’t think MLB cares as long as its one of their baseballs and not some other foreign object or non-MLB endorsed baseball…

no it happens every game especially in chicago

usually not. If you don’t interupt play and you don’t throw it at a player or anyone then it will probably be overlooked.

However if you hit an outfielder with it, or wait and throw it into the middle of the next play, then you may get thrown out or arrested.

you wouldn’t get thrown out, that is part of the tradition…unless maybe if it was obvious you were aiming at an opposing player…but chances are no.

  • MechanicalMan

No, but why would someone want to behave like a drunken Cubs fan?

Just be careful you don’t hit a seagull, especially in Toronto.

Yes, you will get ejected but it’s worth it. Your ticket should say no throwing objects onto the field. Although in spring training you could get away with it.

In Houston at Minute Maid Park if you throw a homerun ball back onto the field you get escorted out of the stadium by security and banned from the park for the rest of the season.

varies at different ballparks, but the majority of them you get ejected. You can also be banned from the stadium for a period of time.
